Abstract

The most controversia! aspect of Alonso Cano's work is without doubt his architectural achievement, due largely to the lack of data. However, the artist seems to fínd the freedom to express his ideas in the design of altarpieces. The completed works, and those planned, show a series of ornamental and structural motifs which can be traced as «suggestions» in the series of Granada altarpieces dating from the second half of the l 7'h century, which are studied in this paper.
