Abstract

This study is the first of a series on historical exhibitions in Argentina, forming a cycle lasting somewhat less than twenty years, which were influential in establishing an artistic climate in the country. The analysis begins with the first Exhibition in El Ateneo in 1893 and runs through to the inauguration of the Salón Nacional in1911. In this first paper, we discuss the exhibitions held in the Athenaeum between 1893 and 1896, which constituted the preparation for the 1911 event. These exhibitions show the aesthetic influence of the academic criteria established by the Sociedad Estímulo de Bellas Artes, which had been founded in 1876.
