Abstract

The relationship between Classical Greek tragedy and the cinema has not been as fruitful as might have been expected. Only in the 1960s was a certain relation established, through the important contribution of the Greek director Michel Cacoyannis. After sorne less fortunate experiments carried out by other directors, Cacoyannis was the first to create a successful film version of a Greek tragedy, with his Electra in 1961. This is due to a combination of two essential decisions taken: to shoot the film outside the limits of the traditional stage set and to take ful) advantage of the potentialities offered by movie media resources.
