Abstract

This paper examines the repercussion of the concept of Perspective in the artist's social position. Thanks to this phenomenon and to a general awareness of the importance of scientific knowledge, artistic freedom could be defended and the artist was valued socially as never before. Since the role of Perspective in art shares common roots with the liberal arts, an objective source of knowledge based 011 mathematics can be claimed, which lcads to a consideration of art as intellectually rigorous. However, can a work of art be justified with purely geometric arguments? To what extent are artists prepared to bow to a mathematical norm?
