Abstract

In the context of 18th century Spain a political and civil regime was established based on representation, control and, in general, this period saw the spread of conservative and Counter Reformation idea, in much the same way as in other Catholic states. In the case of Granada these elements came together in the figure of the philanthropist Pedro Pascasio de Baños, a Caballero Veinticuatro and Director of the Royal Provincial Revenue. He patronised an endless list of late-baroque works and soon became one of the main promoters of art and culture, and a key figure in the social life of Granada.
