Abstract

The town of Úbeda is one of the key centres for a true understanding of the Spanish Renaissance, since it shows how the aristocracy favoured a modern architectural style, in contrast to the archaic gothic of the traditional centres of power. In this period of renewal, the work of such an artist as Vandelvira not only represents an example of this tendency, but also shows how the artistic world is profoundly reinterpreted by its own creators. Vandelvira comes to symbolize the !cap from the traditional artisan to the free artist and professional, thanks to the enormous effort he expended in gaining wide-ranging training and culture and to his truly free and personal creative powers.
