Abstract

The canvas of the Crucifixion that El Greco painted for the College of Doña Maria of Aragon in Madrid, shows the evolution of the iconographic theme of the Blood of Christ. This paper reviews different iconographic formulations that finally converge in the configuration proposed by the Cretan painter, clarifying his graphical sources, including the engraving of Martin Schongauer not linked yet to the work of El Greco. Finally, this essay reviews this iconographic line and its consequences from Bernini to Goya.
