Abstract

This article examines the figure of José de la Riva-Agüero y Osma (1885-1944), a Peruvian intellectual who distinguished himself in the fields of history, literature, law and politics. On the basis of a study of his theory of a Peru which represented a synthesis of two cultures, we analyse the struggle to achieve a national art undertaken by various Peruvian architects at the end of the 19th century and, especially, in the first half of the 20th century.
