Abstract

The basic tenets of caricature drawing, ,which were established by Wright and Champfleury in the second half  of  the  19th  century,  led  the  novelist  and  art  critic  Jacinto  Octavio  Picón  to  produce  his  Apuntes para la Historia de la Caricatura. This was a divulgative synthesis and represented the f irst Spanish contribution to the history of the genre. We attempt to provide an analysis of this work, and to clarify the history of the sudden  expansion  of  the  genre  in  the  illustrated  press  and  its  recognition  as  one  of  the  characteristic  signs of modernity.
