Abstract

The work of the painter Narciso Virgilio Díaz de la Peña, belonging to the Barbizon School, is the object of an independent critical assessment compared with the taste of the time, and the subjective critical views common in France and in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), first mentioned in 1873. His use of colour and the romanticism of his paintings of the forest of Fontainebleau were specially praised. He is well-represented in the state Czech collections, and some twenty works —paintings, drawings and engraving— have been identified.
