Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to examine the earliest crucifixion in the works of Alonso de Mena y Escalante. The sculpture is of only average quality, but from the iconographical point of view it can be placed in the tradition developed by Pablo de Rojas and his most immediate successors. It is a paradigmatic example of late mannerism, which Mena would soon abandon, under the influence of other contemporary sculptors such as the García brothers or Jean de Mesa, in order to create his own model, now completely naturalistic, which he would develop, with greater or lesser success, and with only slight variations, for the rest of his professional life.
