Abstract

The biography of the Sevillian painter Lucas de Valdés is well known, nevertheless, through this publication, we contribute to a certain unpublished issue. Until now, the reasons why the painter left the city of Seville in 1719, moving to Cadiz, were unknown. There were suspicions about his delicate financial circumstance, which would push him to take new labour opportunities. Now, we provide new information that makes it possible to clarify this issue by confirming the poor financial condition of the painter, to the extent that he was imprisoned for defaulting, exposing the difficult situation in which Lucas de Valdés lived his last years.
