Abstract

The tone of aesthetic withdrawal which is first seen in Father Aguilar’s Crucifixion of Carabanchel was to be continued in the works he made from 1956 onwards in his new posting, Seville. Far removed from the baroque tradition of sculpture and ever nearer to the views of the Vatican Council with respect to the liturgy and art, Father José María began to imbue his sculptures with a new cultural identity, a trend which would culminate in his works of meditation, which were created once he had moved to Inca, for health reasons.
