Abstract

The establishing of the Indian villages in the New Kingdom of Granada involved the systematic building of doctrinal churches which in turn had to be provided with ecclesiastical garments and utensils to be used in the conversion to Christianity in this region. This paper examines the garments and furniture which are held in the New Granada churches, especially the eastern goods which arrived at Terra Firme by means of the sea link connecting the Indies Route with the Manila Galleon. Silk was an especially important material in the making of church garments.
