Abstract

Granada was incorporated into Castille in 1492 and soon afterwards the town had become a centre of the arts of the first order, since the need to convert the territory to Christianity involved a massive importing of works of art and artists. However, once this initial period was over, the town was soon able to supply the wide surrounding area with art works and master artists. This would explain the intense artistic relations between Granada and Murcia, Málaga, Jaén, etc., from the very beginnings of the 16th century. Such was the amount and variety of works of sculpture produced that Granada was able to satisfy the artistic needs ot the surrounding provinces, where demand clearly exceeded supply, not only in works of art but also in artists.
