Abstract

The Subject of the present paper is a hitherto little known facet of Picasso's work. We provide an overwiew of his work as a sculptor and consider the variety of opinions, methods of cataloguing and contradictory data which have been published about this aspect of his work. We then discuss the main materials, themes, ironies, reconsiderations, ... which characterize, often in a surprising way, the different stages of his career as sculptor by means of an analysis of sorne of the most significant sculptures created by the sculptor who was also a painter.
I owe the choice of topic to the interest which Prof. Félez Lubelza showed in my concem for this aspect of Picasso's work when I was a student of hers. The resulting article is principally due, then to her interest and support.
