Abstract

In Vélez-Málaga and its surroundings important works were planned in the second half of the 18th century, although not all of them were actually constructed -as in the case of the bridges over the rivers Vélez and Rubite. After a discussion of the relationship between road and bridge and the characteristics of the Vélez road, we analyze the plans drawn up by the engineer captain José García Martínez, and by the architect of the Academy of San Femando, Domingo Tomas, and we relate them to the polemic between architects and engineers which occurred en the 19th century and wich arose from the different kinds of professional training these two bodies received.
