Abstract

Pablo Céspedes' Discurso sobre el templo de Salomón. Acerca del origen de la pintura is a document of primary importance in the development of the theory and practice of architecture and painting in the 16th century, leading to the definitive form given to them under the influence of the counter reformation during the seventeenth century. A central theme in the work of this Cordoban theoretician is the change undergone from models drawn from classical culture to biblical ones, based on the Old Testament, de Céspedes, trained in the Erasmus school and also in the ltalian tradition, carne to form part of Andalucian cultural life towards the end of the 16th century, and from then on had a profound influence on contemporary Spanish humanistics culture. In the present study we publish Céspedes' original text for the first time, a text which has traditionally been know through the copy made by Al faro Cean Bermúdez. This work expreses perfectly the spanish Christian humanistics theses of author, which led in the direction of a legitimazion of military grandeur and presented a metaphysical justification of the imperialist policy carried out by King Philip.
