Abstract

The present study deals with the significan! advance represented by the Athens Agreement of 1931 in attempts to safeguard our architectural heritage. In the agreement the concept of the protection of buildings as single, isolated objects is superseded, and the surrounding context is also taken into consideration. We analyse the content of the various papers presented at the lnternational Conference held in Athens in October 1931 in an attempt to determine the criteria on which the recommendations on the protection of the «environment» were based. This is the concept which underlies ali action regarding the spaces surrounding any historical building which is internationally sanctioned in the Athens Agreement.
