Abstract

The attitude of historical materialism towards art has been foil of errors and this has produced great confusion in the fields of aesthetics, and the philosophy and history of art. In this latter field, and specifically in that of art historiography, the Marxist option has come to be identified with a radical social form of art history, and even one simply of a mechanical-economic nature. In the present article the author attempts to go beyond these confusions, basing his arguments on the epistemological premises suggested by Mateo Revilla in an article published in 1984.
