Abstract

This paper offers sorne reflections from the historian's point of view on the origin and development of Jewish quarters in medieval Spanish cities. Such quarters tended to be exclusive and to be controlled by an autarchy, and this led to a characteristic mode of social organisation and use of space, based upon religious tradition.
