Abstract

The Queen of the Night, from The magic flute (by W. A. Mozart and E. Schikaneder) portrays a betrayed mother, an undervalued spouse, a strong and independent woman and a political opponent for Sarastro (the Sun Circle leader priest). She is a rara avis in the operatic scene, where female characters submissive to the patriarchal system are predominant. The Queen of the Night represents the confrontation between nature and civilization, matriarchy and patriarchy, and the universal conflict between mothers and daughters. The last point, where the other are converging, is the main goal of the paper.
