Abstract

The aim of this paper is to broach the subject of the origins of the teaching profession feminization in Spain, through the study of the schoolmistresses who taught in the schools supported by the Economic Society of Valencia between 1819 and 1866. We will emphasize the discourse that identified schoolmistresses and mothers since the middle of XIX century and we will agree with the following hypothesis: that discourse was the consequence, not the cause, of the incorporation of women to a public field like the teaching profession.
