Abstract

This study is a bibliographical repertory of works published in Spain on physical education and gymnastics and sport activities about women during the 19th century. It highlights the major works, their impact and influence in different doctrinal discourses as well as the incorporation of women to gymnastics and sportive practices of the nineteenth century. This bibliographical selection is aimed to clarify the historical development of physical education and sport, to legitimize the process of institutionalization and also it contributes to a better understanding of the historical studies about women in the social construction of feminism in 19th century Spain.
