The expanded gaze: the photo-essay as a tool in architecture
Main Article Content
Abstract
The goal of this essay is to introduce a new methodological approach that could be applied to architectural research, and therefore, to the practice of teaching architecture. The methodology developed, which has an arts-based research background, uses photographic pairing, photographic series and photo-essays as strategies. During the experimentation process, data is compiled and results are drawn from images. In this way of approaching the matter, images are responsible for laying out, developing and concluding a discourse. Moreover, this study will assess the relevance of photography when it comes to approaching architecture, allowing us to explore the visual potential of images, since they enable the communication of the specific values in accordance to each research. Exploring the links between artistic and architectural disciplines may contribute to the discovery of places from which to begin to understand reality differently.
