Abstract

Starting with an analysis of the socio-political and artistic–cultural contexts within 1980s Spain, this work provides a critical study of the editorial projects that emerged during this period. This is contrasted with the editorial policies of the time on an international level, principally in Europe and the US. The research required extensive fieldwork based on direct contact with the different players involved in the publishing process and an analysis of the editorial projects during this period, including some important precedents. The study examines three cases in particular, namely the journals Figura (Seville, 1983-1986), Figura Internacional, Sur Exprés (Madrid, 1988) and Arena Internacional del Arte (Madrid, 1989), as paradigmatic examples of journal projects that operated as a touchstone between artists, critics and cultural agents and unified artistic output, editorial production and diffusion into one single showcase.
