Abstract
By discussing decolonial and contemporary transfeminist theories, this article analyzes the practices of dissident design within the fashion circuit in Argentina. In particular, this paper questions how activist designers inhabit digital media in a context where technology is a main tool for social entrepreneurs. Based on interviews and observations both online and offline, the case Cooperativa de Trabajo Protesta Limitada allows us to showcase the tensions and contradictions between activism and fashion. The article focuses on the critique Protesta articulates through visual content production and delves into two central themes: images of the “other” or alternative bodies and representations of popular culture. Finally, I reflect on the limits, contradictions and successes of these dissident designers that maintain disruptive and activist practices but, simultaneously, recognize themselves as part of the mainstream fashion circuit.
