Performance and photography: an approach to the first itineraries in Spain

Abstract
We understand both action and ephemeral shared time as indissoluble elements of performance, vindicating presence as one of the essential pillars of this practice. These claims –which could be limiting– don’t belittle the importance of other media such as photography or video which, sometimes, interact with performance at a short distance. Feeling receptive to these approaches, we will pay special attention to the collaboration between performance and photography, reviewing concepts such as presence, subjectivity, veracity, document or performativity. Given the wide scope of this subject, we have focused on the Spanish context of the fertile 1960s and 1970’s. These years brought about the emergence of an international symbiosis between the photographic medium and performance; an awakening that drove significant changes in the value of photography and –in the Spanish case– the survival of a performance barely investigated
