Abstract

This article analyzes the demographic and socioeconomic evolution of the city of Guadix throughout the Moorish era and the repopulation after the expulsion of the Moorish. Through the analysis of the Census of 1561 and the Survey Book of 1571, an attempt is made to explain the changes in land ownership registered in the cities of the kingdom of Granada in the period between the Castilian conquest of 1482-1492 and the repopulation after the expulsion of the Moorish in 1570. This analysis demonstrates two key facts: the socioeconomic recovery of part of the Moorish population after the initial expropriation of their rural and urban assets in 1490, which gave rise to the first repopulation, and the concentration of property for the benefit of the Castilian elites after their expulsion in 1570, since in the cities there were no repartimientos, but Moorish assets were auctioned to the highest bidder.
