Abstract

On the Arabic ms, Shudhūr al-dhahab, preserved in the library of the Escorial, nº 530/5, fol. 238r, which the Andalusian poet Ibn Arfa‘ Ra’s devoted to alchemy, was appended with a problematic secondary title Fī fann al-lāmāt which many catalog authors have read assuming an elided sīn followed by the vowel /a/, Fī fann al-salāmāt. For his part, Hartwig Derenbourg, wanting to translate this term al-salāmāt, proposed the word “immunities” supposed to refer to the activity of alchemists. We would like to ensure the relevance of the reading and the adequacy of the translation; and, in our view, this can only be possible after a graphic, lexico-morphological and historical study of this term.
