Abstract

The Corcyraean stasis (427-425) was the first and most tragic incident of civil strife during the Peloponnesian War, mostly as a result of the Athenian and Lacedaemonian support of the political groups in conflict, both democrats and oligarchs. This paper deals with the socioeconomic background of the antagonic factions and the strategical significance that the geopolitical framework -the Northwest of the Greek continent-had for the two great powers who fight for the hegemony in the Greek world.
