Abstract

Fernando de Herrera is the author of the most extensive, complete and organic corpus of elegies of the Spanish literature. His thirty-eight elegies, independently of other classical or medieval substrata like Platonism or Petrarchism respectively, common to the rest of his song-book, are direct heiresses of the elegiac classic poetics and of the same topics, themes and motifs used by the great elegiac poets of the Augustan period. In the present survey, we consider how Herrera falls within this classical tradition by means of the thematic analysis of his first elegy, bearing in mind, at the same time, the way in which the Sevillian deals with the different motifs and elegiac topoi with regard to his models.
