Abstract

In spite of its flaws, given its unfinished form, the Discorsi sopra la prima de ca di Tito Livio deal with several recurrent topics that provide this singular commentary on Livy with unity and coherence. Among these topics especial attention needs to be drawn to Machiavelli 's defence of ancient Ro me as social and political model worth imitating in sixteenth-century Italy.
