Abstract

lntroduction to the importance of Classical Tradition (fortuna dell'antico) studies in order to better comprehend a work of art (not only literary works), thus highlighting this perspective's compatibility with both the philological studies and the interdisciplinary approach required by certain genres. We take baroque opera as an ideal example and a testing ground where solid knowledge of the Greco-Latín tradition is highly crucial -not only as a source of topics, myths and hypertexts, but also of ideas for the discussions regarding literary theory and musicology at that time. The libretto as a result of this
process. An approach to Metastasio's case.
