Abstract

This paper highlights some points of a case study conducted in a shanty town in Brazil, addressing the importance of instrumental music in social change at the present time. It also attempts to reveal another side of music, which is not well known in European countries. We will briefly describe some examples of projects that use music as a tool for the socialization of marginalized people, who, were it not for music education, would not have changed their lives. Panoramas of delinquency, drug abuse, illiteracy, amongst other ills that are common-place in an at-risk population, are much more prevalent in developing countries. The purpose of this study is to extend the range of musical cultures in our teaching practices.
