Abstract

The work presented below is a comparative analysis of the use of the past expression in Russian and Spanish. The study shows the mechanisms used in each language to reflect the same situation or event in the past. Since the analysis is based on the communicative point of view of language, it does not only focus on the linguistic level but it also provides other pragmatic-discursive values such as the perspective of the speaker, the speaker's communicative intention or the speaker's attitude to specific facts. The contrast between the verbal systems of both languages, and in particular between the words used to express the past tense, is particularly interesting both for teachers of Spanish and Russian, for these type of studies reveal clear intuitions about the possible difficulties and pitfalls that the student can find in the process of learning a second language.
