Literary Translation and the Theory of Norms and Exploitations: a study based on the Spanish translation of "The Garnet Bracelet"

This article addresses the concept of foregrounding at the lexical level in relation to the Theory of Norms and Exploitations (Hanks 2013) to reflect upon specific problems in literary translation applied to a possible Spanish translation of The Garnet Bracelet by Alexandr Kuprin. Since foregrounding must be interpreted along the lines of the conventions of the linguistic code in which it was written, its translation demands the same effect in L2 (Language 2) according to its linguistic norms as well. Thus, I argue that the concepts of Norm and Exploitation proposed by Hanks are particularly useful, as they provide a reliable linguistic base to determine when foregrounding is produced at the lexical level and they contribute to indicate the anisomorphism in interlinguistic processes.
