Editorial Process and Referee System
Editorial process steps
Originals submitted for publication will be subjected to an editorial process consisting of several phases before becoming a published article.
- 1 Receipt and acknowledgement of receipt: The author will be sent an e-mail acknowledging receipt.
- 2 Preliminary evaluation: The manuscript will undergo a preliminary evaluation by members of the editorial board, who will ensure that it meets style guidelines and determine whether the content falls within the thematic scope of Cuadernos de Rusística Española (CRE)
- 3 Peer review: double-blind system: Once it has been established that the manuscript contents meet the formal and thematic requirements, the text will be sent to a minimum of one peer who will submit a report filling in the Peer Review Form according to the guidelines found in the Guide for Reviewers.
- 4 Informing authors of the results: The results of the evaluation process will be sent to the author immediately. Where applicable, the author will also be informed of any modifications that must be made in drafting the final version of the manuscript.
- 5 Galley proofs: Using the final version, the galley proofs will be sent to the author for the final revision.
- 6 Final publication: If the author has not made any changes to the galley proofs, the article will be published on the Cuadernos de Rusística Española (CRE) journal website and later in hard copy. The authors will be informed about the status of their manuscript via the notifications and e-mails that the OJS system sends throughout the entire editorial process.
Editorial deadlines and turnaround times
The submission schedule for original manuscripts begins on January, 1 each year and ends April, 30 (the same year). Any originals received outside this window will be considered for publication in following year’s volume.
- The journal Cuadernos de Rusística Española (CRE) commits to completing the various phases of the editorial process according to the following maximum turnaround times:
- Acknowledgement of manuscript receipt: 3 days.
- Author notification of preliminary evaluation results: 10 days.
- Peer review process: 2 months.
- Author notification regarding the results of the peer evaluation: 5 days after the journal receives the last reviewer’s report.
Final publication on the journal website: 1 month after the author sends the modified version of the text.
Criteria for accepting work
The factors that determine whether a work is accepted or rejected by the journal editors are the following:
- The originality, novelty and importance of the research will be evaluated together. In other words, an original and novel focus is not sufficient to publish the study. It must also be of interest to the discipline.
- The importance of the research in terms of scientific, social and cultural advancement.
- The scientific validity and reliability of both the sources consulted and the methods used during the research process.
- Suitable writing and logical organisation and presentation of the manuscript.
- A use of inclusive language in the articles received.
Information on the referee system
The works received will be subjected to review by a minimum of two external evaluators of the same or higher academic rank. In the case of discrepancies between the opinions, the text will be sent to a third reviewer, whose decision on whether to publish will be final.
A double-blind review system will be used, i.e., the identity of the authors and reviewers will not be revealed to each other.
The reviewers, following the specifications in the Guide for Reviewers, will submit a report filling in the Peer Review Form.
The selection of reviewers remains the purview of the journal’s editorial board, which will consider academic and scientific merit and professional experience and include both national and international specialists. Members of the editorial board may at times serve as reviewers.
Relationship between authors and the journal
Confidentiality of identity
The identity of the author/s submitting a manuscript for evaluation and possible publication will be held in confidentiality by the director, secretary and members of the editorial board pending publication and will remain anonymous if the article is rejected.
The names and e-mail addresses given to Cuadernos de Rusística Española (CRE) will be used exclusively for the purposes expressed by the journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other person.
Manuscript confidentiality
When the manuscripts are in the review/evaluation process, they will not be used in any other way under any circumstances by any person involved in the process until they are published, where applicable.
Manuscripts rejected for publication will be kept on file in the Cuadernos de Rusística Española (CRE) manuscript archive. In no case will they be used by any member of that publication.
Ethical conduct in research and publication
It is the duty of the journal to detect and report the following unethical practices:
- Fabrication, falsification or omission of data in the study.
- Plagiarism: authors are responsible for obtaining the necessary permission for the partial reproduction of material (text, tables or figures) from other publications and to cite their source correctly. This permission must be obtained from both the author and the publishing house that published the material.
- Duplicate publication: this consists of publishing an article or study that has essentially already been published. This contravenes international laws on copyright, professional ethics and the profitable use of resources.
- False authorship: the list of contributing authors must only include those people who made an intellectual contribution to the work.
- Conflicts of interest: the journal expects authors to declare any commercial or personal association that could create a conflict of interest related to the submitted text.
- Violation of human or animal rights and laws during the study.
- The use of not inclusive language.
Declaration of Authorship, Originality and Publication Rights
All authors must declare their compliance with each and every one of the points that articulate this Declaration of authorship, originality and publication rights.

Guide for Reviewers
The main goal of this guide is to ensure that the entire peer review process for the journal Cuadernos de Rusística Española will:
- Guarantee an independent review containing respectful and constructive criticism for the authors.
- Ensure that the manuscripts present a comprehensible, objective and balanced view of their respective subject.
- Confirm that the information is up-to-date, scientifically available and verifiable.
- Confirm that the conclusions or arguments resulting from the study are understandable and relevant for the discipline.
Instructions regarding confidentiality and ethical behaviour
Confidentiality
All the manuscripts submitted are privileged information. Reviewers are requested not to show or discuss them with third parties except to consult on some specific aspect.
Ethical behaviour
The journal Cuadernos de Rusística Española (CRE) expects the following of the reviewers involved in the editorial process:
- If the reviewer believes that a different person is in a better position to evaluate the relevance of the material, they should communicate this to the editorial board.
- If the reviewer believes that s/he will find it difficult to evaluate the material objectively, this should be immediately communicated to the editorial board.
- If the reviewer has a current or past relationship with any of the institutions or people related to the manuscript that could result in a conflict of interest, the reviewer must reflect this fact in the Peer Review Form.
- The reviewer will be asked to pay special attention to the use of inclusive language in the articles they receive for review.
Review deadlines
After agreeing to evaluate the manuscript, the reviewer must submit his or her report within a month.
Structure and style of the review reports
Reviewers will submit their report by completing the evaluation form, always following these guidelines:
- The peer review process serves a dual purpose: to advise the editorial board on whether or not the manuscript should be published and to indicate any improvements that could be made to the paper.
- The reviewer should be aware that his or her job is to provide expert advice about a colleague’s work and not to judge or make decisions. The tone used in the reports will always reflect the highest respect for people and institutions.
- All criticism and appraisals will be objective and not be mere differences of opinion or unsubstantiated personal evaluations.
- Criticisms must always address the arguments and consistency of the data and never be directed at the authors.
Information on the aspects to evaluate
General and specific aspects of the manuscript will be evaluated in order to determine whether the research:
- Advances knowledge and is relevant for the discipline.
- Meets the level of argument, writing and structure required by scientific communications.
- Is of interest for the readers of the journal.
Evaluation of general aspects
General comments will be justified using specific examples from the manuscript or other published works and should consider:
- The degree of originality of the work.
- Its importance for the progress of the discipline, and where applicable, the social, cultural or economic implications.
Evaluation of specific aspects
An evaluation of the specific aspects will be made and grouped into the following blocks:
Presentation and writing
The clarity and precision of the writing in the manuscript will be evaluated, including the main body of the text and the titles, summaries and keywords. It is also extremely important that these elements fully reflect the main subject of the study. Special attention will be paid to the use of inclusive language in the articles received.
Length and structure
This block will evaluate whether the text is structured into logical sections that convey the information efficiently and whether any of these sections needs to be expanded, shortened or removed.
Methodology
This block will evaluate whether the methods and criteria were correctly chosen.
Findings and conclusions
This block will evaluate whether the arguments and most important findings are clearly identified in the manuscript and whether the conclusions are derived from their analysis.
Citations and references
This block will evaluate whether all the citations and references used in the text are relevant and up-to-date.
Concurrence
The reviewer will indicate whether s/he knows of other works, published or forthcoming, whose contents are identical or very similar to the manuscript being evaluated.
