Abstract

Some time ago the study of private libraries was recognized as a valuable source of information about the history of culture and ideas. This study of the private library of Francisco de Saavedra, the second intendent of Caracas (18th century), allows us to explore the humanistic background, the literary tastes and the interests of this erudite. The outstanding collection of over eight hundred books reflects the liberal spirit of de Saavedra as well as his fondness for French authors and interest in the issues and events of his era, includi ng travel and technological and economic development.
