Abstract

It is the aim of this article to suggest lines of research starting from two points: the precedent of the conquest of Granada as a model for the colonization of New Spain, and the points of coincidence and paraleles in linguistic and missionary politics undertaken towards Indians and Granadan Muslims. We try to establish that the spirit of Reconquista was a main factor in the American enterprise. The ideological bases and justifications of the conquest of New Spain owes to the Messianic exaltation produced around the conquest of Granada including dreams of universal Conversion and the perception of a cosmic fight between Cristianity and Islam.
