Abstract

From the begining of the XVIII century steps were carried out in order to establish an university in the city of Guadalajara (México). The expulsión of the jesuits in 1767 accelerated the process. The creation of this University was seen not only as an educational need in the region, but also as an opportunity to achieve greater independence from the Mexico City. All point of view, which were started by the Borbons in Spain, which would subsequently infuence some aspects of the project (subjects, statutes, management). The viceroyalty and the institucional authorities “tapatías” (Bishopric, Town Council and “Audiencia”) published several favorable report, concerning details of financy, curricula and infraestructure of the forthcoming university, being the University of Mexico City the only that disagree with this project. Finally in November of 1791, Charles IV give his approval of the project and the following year the opening ceremony of the “Real y Literaria Universidad” of Guadalajara was held.
