Abstract

Letting clear the importance of the Catastro de Ensenada for the study of the Crown of Castile in the 18th century, and after accomplishing a short historiographic sketch on the fiscal defraudation in this source, a study from two different points of view is approached: firstly, the comparison between the result of calculating the total income and the agricultural surface with official figures; secondly, between the total agricultural production and tithe certifications. In both cases, the result turns out to be positive, i.e., the level of distortion would mean a 20-40 percent of the total.
