Abstract

The main goal of this article is to point out the legal reasons of slavery in XVIth century Spain —war, nature (in the aristotelic sense) and birth— and to establish a paralellism with the real methods of obtaining slaves. Through the study of the slave population of the city of Granada, we realise that slavery was not always legal.
