Abstract

The expulsion of the Moriscos from Extremadura was a long and difficult process. The decree of expulsion from the region was signed in July 1610, although from the beginning of that year the Morisco population had already begun to fly after being subjected to special vigilance on account of their resistance to submit to conversion. The acceptance of exceptions from the obligation to depart and the support of the old Christian population to avoid the exile of the Moriscos from Extremadura, implied the prolongation in time of the process and deeply complicated its execution. The decree of expulsion did not mean the end of the Morisco presence in Extremadura nor in the rest of the Iberian territories. Those who were able to come back joined those who never leaved their homes despite the efforts of the Crown officials to implement the orders of expulsion.
