Abstract

When the Jesuits were expelled from Spain in 1767, their possessions were confiscated. This worked to the advantage of the University of Granada, which took over the building of St. Paul's Church. The rich furnishings were divided up and the best pieces kept by the university, among them a painting of the lmmaculate Conception, clearly inspired by the work of Alonso Cano, by Juan de Sevilla.
