Abstract

The architecture of the Counter-Reformation in the diocese of Orihuela has such a main protagonists two important buildings: the San Nicolas collegiate church of Alicante and the Santa Maria church of Elche. The last one takes the typology of single nave with chapels, typical of the Counter-Reformation and also used in the Alicante collegiate. This plan was the most suitable for the assembly of the faithful and the new liturgical needs based on Eucharistic exaltation and Virgin, and serves as the stage for the performances of the Elche Mystery play.
