Abstract

This study analyses the transformation during the 16th century of a church building into a military fortress: the parish church of the lncarnation in Motril. These changes occurred in the historical context of an arca which formed a frontier between Christian and Moslem power zones: the coast of Granada province. We should also bear in mind that the population was predominantly Morisco (that is, Moorish converts to Christianity who remained in Spain after the Reconquest) until the end of the Alpujarras Uprising. As a result of the changes undergone, the church took on the appearance of a building constructed as an embattled fortress, largely thanks to the work of the architect Luis Machuca, and others.
