Abstract

The concordar between the Catholic church and the Spanish State signed in 1851 represented the nonnalization of their mutual relations after a century of tensions and confrontations. The process of disestablislunent had broken the traditional balance of power, since the Church' s heritage was now in the hands of the Sta te. In compensation, the Ministry of Justice set in place the distribution of funds to each of the Spanish dioceses for the repair and upkeep of its church buildings. These funds were administered by the Church Restoration Board of each diocese. The results of a study of the modus operandi of this organization in Guadix-Baza can be extrapolated to other areas and illustrate the conditions under which religious reconstruction took place in the second half of the 18th century.
