Abstract

The genre of the travel journal often leads on to that of the historical essay. During the 2nd half of the 18th century the past was often studied by means of the gentleman's "educational journey", the best-known
exponents of which in Spain are the diaries of Antonio Ponz and Francisco Pérez Bayer. The latter takes a historical viewpoint in his Diary of 1782, where he describes everything he comes across in the journey from his native Valencia, through Andalusia to end in Lisbon. His description of Granada is an important source for a historical study of the town, where for a few years a sizeable group of Enlightened intelligentsia and artísts
lived.
