Abstract

The main aim of the present paper is to illustrate the importance of the study of documents in the national archives for a proper understanding of the history of Melilla. Specifically, we discuss a large number of documents from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries collected by Rafael Fernández de Castro y Pedrera, who left them to the town on his death. A number of Local Governors were concerned to provide its inhabitants with a church, and these documents provide us with new and important information in this respect, and help to fill a gap in the history of the town.
